Alpha
Phi Omega has a strict policy AGAINST hazing
of all kinds. |

We
are the only co-ed service fraternity on the IUPUI
campus. |

The
"Alpha Phi Omega desk" is located
in the basement of the University College in the
Student Activity Center. |

|
| Why
should I join? |
College
should be more than the acquisition of facts and figures;
it should also broaden your experiences, expand and test
your inherent abilities, and sharpen your social skills.
Alpha Phi Omega, through its unique program of leadership,
friendship and service, can add this necessary but often
lacking aspect of college life--and at the same time enable
you to help others while helping yourself.
|
| Who
can join? |
Membership
is open to any student enrolled on a campus where a chapter
exists who is approved for membership by that chapter.
If there is no chapter at your college, but there is a
campus nearby with a chapter, contact that chapter. The
chapter may be able to invite you to participate in their
service program.
|
| Will
this cost me anything? |
Like
most fraternities, we have dues. However, compared to
most social fraternities, our dues are very low. Member
dues are $60 per semester (summer sessions are not counted).
New members (pledges) have $30 due at the beginning of
their pledging period and another $30 when they are activated
with full membership at the end of their pledging period.
Please note that if you are having difficulty paying this
amount, we will work with you to make sure you meet your
requirements (paying in installments over the semester,
for example).
A large majority of this
money goes right into your chapter. This
money is used for a variety of things such as materials
used during your pledging period. The chapter also organizes
several different types of events and will sometimes pay
for food for its members or help defer the costs involved
with certain events. As a member of this chapter you will
have the opportunity to run for the office of Treasurer
as well as serve on the Finance committee, if you so desire.
This will allow you to help decide how the money gets
spent.
|
| Are
there any requirements to being a member? |
Yes,
there are a few. They are designed to keep everyone active
and actively helping the chapter move forward. The requirements
generally consist of paying your semester dues, attending
various scheduled events/rituals (pledge initiation/activation,
chapter program planning conferences, recruitment events),
attending weekly chapter meetings, and completing 25
hours of service. If you are actively participating in
the chapter, these requirements will be easy to meet.
The 25 hours of service is per semester, which
rounds to a little under 1.5 hours of service per
week.
|
| Wouldn't
it be cheaper to just volunteer on my own? |
Sure
it would--but passing along service opportunities is only
one part of what Alpha Phi Omega does. We are asked this
question occasionally, and likely very few members would
wish they hadn't ever joined Alpha Phi Omega. First of
all, you are not just volunteering yourself, you have
the whole chapter participating in many projects. Together,
we can accomplish more, faster than all of us doing it
on our own. We often get organizations searching for volunteers
to help with their project, when they come to us for help,
we can often offer them many volunteers all at once. Ask
any organization that needs volunteers how they survive
and they'll tell you how much easier groups like Alpha
Phi Omega make it for them.
That's just the service
side of things. We are also one big group of friends.
Many of us hang out together outside of school and APO
and have made some very special friendships. Alpha Phi
Omega is a great place to meet new friends because we
have such a wide variety of people--all are welcome.
Last, but not least, there
is the leadership development aspect. We have many elected
and appointed positions that give our members real leadership
experience that will be extremely valuable later in life.
Working with people, coordinating projects and events,
and participating in the various leadership development
seminars we offer and sponsor through out the year are
some examples. You get back what you put into it. Ask
any member and they'll tell you that joining Alpha Phi
Omega has been a rewarding experience.

"My favorite service project was a White River Cleanup day. It was a lot of work, but it was badly needed. I learned a great deal about the area I didn't know and was able to help the city in a way everyone could enjoy." -Noah Coffey
